Born in Murcia (Spain), Dr. Jose Manuel Martínez completed his studies at the Faculty of Medicine in the region and underwent specialized training in obstetrics and gynecology at the Santa Lucía University Hospital in Cartagena.
After completing his residency, and while balancing a full-time role as a specialist at the public hospital in Cartagena, he decided to enhance his academic background by pursuing two official postgraduate programs during the same academic year: Clinical Medicine Research (Miguel Hernández University, earning the "extraordinary master's award”); and Advanced Medical Competencies in the field of Oncological Gynecology and Multidisciplinary Breast Pathology (University of Barcelona).
Currently, his work is divided into three main areas:
As a healthcare practitioner at Bellvitge University Hospital, where he serves as the head of the Benign Pathology Unit, conducting consultations and surgeries for various conditions such as uterine myomatosis, pelvic floor issues, endometrial pathology, endometriosis, genital aging, and cervical and lower genital tract pathology. He has extensive experience in hysteroscopy, vaginal surgery and various approaches to conditions requiring transabdominal intervention: laparotomic, laparoscopic, and robotic surgery. He is accredited as a robotic surgeon by the European Society for Gynecological Surgery (SERGS) and holds the European Diploma in Gynecological Endoscopy (GESEA, ESGE). Currently, he is involved in studies on regenerative treatment of the lower genital tract using CO2 laser therapy or PRP, addressing the effects of aging and their impact on patients' quality of life.
He dedicates his teaching efforts as an associate medical professor at the University of Barcelona, also serving as the coordinator of postgraduate education. Actively involved in resident education, he collaborates with various pharmaceutical and surgical technology industries through seminars, webinars, and symposiums.
As a researcher, he actively participates in various impact studies related to the molecular diagnosis of endometrial and ovarian cancers, minimally invasive techniques for treating endometriosis, the effects of diet on endometrial cancer, and the utility of AI in diagnosing various uterine pathologies, among others.

Key surgical strategies discussed include optimal trocar placement to accommodate limited abdominal space, the use of advanced optics for better visualization, and strategic tool application like bipolar and monopolar energies for precise cutting and coagulation. Dr. Martinez underscores the importance of robotic surgery in facilitating these approaches, notably with shorter learning curves and enhanced surgical dexterity. The presentation emphasizes anatomical considerations, such as uterine artery and bladder dissection, and the utilization of real-time fluorescent imaging for safety enhancement. Additionally, the session covers the adaptability required in the use of uterine manipulators and electrosurgical devices to manage variable anatomy effectively, ensuring high safety standards and optimal surgical outcomes. This training event not only aims to equip surgeons with practical skills but also to inspire innovative approaches to gynecological surgery.

Since the description of the first vaginal hysterectomy in 1813, the surgical technique has experienced minor advancements compared to the associated technology for the same procedure. These advancements allow us to perform this surgery in a more precise, efficient, and safe manner for patients. Despite a slight trend towards a reduction in its performance, in the United States, it remains the most frequent surgery among the female population. That is why it requires proper learning and standardization of surgical steps, which we will explain in detail. Not only that, but we will also teach different techniques for the same surgical step, which will provide us with additional surgical resources to apply in a more personalized manner. This lecture is recommended, from surgeons in training who can familiarize themselves with the anatomical spaces,, to advanced surgeons who may find certain surgical maneuvers performed using robotic surgery interesting.
