Bellvitge Alumni of Gynaecology Academy is the academic portal of the Gynecology Department at Bellvitge University Hospital. One of our missions is the dissemination and enhancement of teaching and innovation in gynecological surgery for benign pathology, pelvic floor disorders, breast pathology, and gynecologic oncology.
Since the inauguration of Bellvitge University Hospital (HUB) on November 8, 1972, and its subsequent collaborative merger in 1987 with the Institut Català de la Salut (ICS), HUB has been a reference hospital for complex pathology, especially surgical pathology. Proof of this, is the biennial celebration of international courses on gynecological and breast surgery. Since its inauguration in 1987, it has had the privilege of hosting the highest-level national and international surgeons in its facilities to perform live surgeries, discuss them, and enrich the knowledge of the entire gynecological community.
With the pioneering development of multidisciplinary units in 1996 and the initiation of a new strategic plan in 2003, the Bellvitge Gynecology Department has not only excelled in patient care but also in surgical education, welcoming students, residents, externs, master's and international fellows year after year. What we affectionately call Bellvitge Alumni.
Thanks to this brotherhood of gynecologists that grows from generation to generation, Bellvitge Alumni of Gynaecology Academy aims to maintain its commitment to the training of our colleagues in a virtual and telemedicine manner, welcoming all those who wish to join our great family!

Graduate in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Valencia in 1993, with subsequent specialization in Gynecology and Obstetrics at the La Fe University Hospital in Valencia in 1998. Awarded a Doctorate in Medicine and Surgery from the Universitat de València in 2002, with a thesis titled "Vertical Transmission of HIV." Possesses extensive experience in biostatistics following the completion of the Statistical Methods in Health Sciences course at the Laboratory of Applied and Modeling Statistics, Autonomous University of Barcelona in 1995. Currently a member of the Benign Gynecology Pathology Unit and the Functional Breast Unit at Bellvitge University Hospital and she serves as the supervisor for residents in the department. Since 2014, she has been an associate professor at the University of Barcelona, accredited by the AQU since 2019. In recent years, she has focused on the development of gynecological intervention guided by ultrasound for the puncture and sclerosis of low-risk ovarian cysts. In terms of research, Dr. Garcia has participated in numerous national and international trials, notably serving as the principal investigator (PI) in a multicenter study titled "Evaluation of Ovarian Reserve After Treatment of Endometriomas by Sclerosis with Alcohol or Surgery Using Anti-Müllerian Hormone." This study is funded by the Carlos III Health Institute. It is worth mentioning that she also leads as PI a study on Radiofrequency Ablation of early-stage breast tumors. Another study focuses on reducing affected margins in conservative surgery for breast cancer, while another aims to validate selective axillary dissection (TAD) after neoadjuvant chemotherapy in locally advanced axillary breast cancer (N2) patients. Finally, her leadership in the multicenter study known as ADARNAT, comparing axillary lymphadenectomy to axillary radiotherapy in patients with positive sentinel nodes after neoadjuvant therapy, is noteworthy. This study is a randomized phase III multicenter trial.

Key surgical strategies discussed include optimal trocar placement to accommodate limited abdominal space, the use of advanced optics for better visualization, and strategic tool application like bipolar and monopolar energies for precise cutting and coagulation. Dr. Martinez underscores the importance of robotic surgery in facilitating these approaches, notably with shorter learning curves and enhanced surgical dexterity. The presentation emphasizes anatomical considerations, such as uterine artery and bladder dissection, and the utilization of real-time fluorescent imaging for safety enhancement. Additionally, the session covers the adaptability required in the use of uterine manipulators and electrosurgical devices to manage variable anatomy effectively, ensuring high safety standards and optimal surgical outcomes. This training event not only aims to equip surgeons with practical skills but also to inspire innovative approaches to gynecological surgery.
