Talk low, talk slow and don’t say too much” may have worked just fine for John Wayne but it certainly will not do for any surgeon! Starting with presenting cases to colleagues and connecting with patients, to later down the line when many surgeons assume leadership roles in public-facing positions or research, communication skills are key. In that sense, for surgeons, it may feel like it’s always “showtime”. Yet many people are still not comfortable presenting material or don’t have the time to take a long communications course. For this reason we have invited a group of seasoned presenters to share their knowledge with you in this Resilient Resident episode devoted to delivering your ideas.

As the word “resident” implies, doctors at this stage may find themselves practically living at the hospital. Depending on the specialty and where one is in the world, during residency a doctor may be expected to work anywhere from 50-80 hours a week. The toll of this is often noticeable when it comes to health in general, and mental health in particular. Anxiety, depression and insomnia, are just a few of the side effects related to burnout. While work-life balance in the context of residency may sound paradoxical, to survive this period choices do have to be made. What kind of sacrifices will be necessary? What kind of time management strategies might come in handy, and what insight can be gleaned from those who have gone through it? We have gathered a panel of expert doctors who will discuss these very topics in the next session of our Resilient Resident Series.

It is a well-known fact that a healthy diet and physical activity play an important part in our well-being. Within a care team, the physician's role is a critical one. Consequently, their well-being can have a big impact not only on care practices but on patient experience as well. For example, many studies point out that physicians and trainees often do not get proper nourishment and hydration while on the job. Looking into this area could provide useful insights to those physicians looking to improve their overall well-being. It has also been shown that physically active physicians get sick less frequently, suffer less burnout, handle stress better, and are more likely to discuss physical activity with their patients. Given the commonplace occurrence of burnout in physicians, we believe that in addition to related issues like heavy workloads and length of shifts, the state of physicians' nutrition and how it affects their work performance and health should also be addressed. In this session, we will discuss the current evidence related to the potential effects of nutrition and physical activity on physicians' occupational well-being and performance, identify gaps, and discuss opportunities to address nutrition as one of the important means of improving physicians' welfare.
