Dr. Miguel Congregado is the Head of the General Thoracic Surgery Department at Quironsalud Infanta Luisa in Seville (Spain). He studied Medicine at the University of Granada, but he completed his PhD at the University of Seville, his city of birth. He specialized in Thoracic Surgery at Virgen Macarena University Hospital, one of the pioneering centers in the world for minimally invasive surgery (performing his first VATS lobectomy in 1993 and his first VATS thymectomy in 1995). This allowed him to gain hands-on experience in thoracic surgery from the outset. Soon, he became an expert in minimally invasive surgery and served as a Professor and later as the Director of Advanced Thoracoscopic Surgery at the Minimally Invasive Centre Jesus Uson (Caceres, Spain) from 2003 to 2020. This center was known for offering the most qualified course on VATS in Spain and Latin America. Dr. Congregado was also a Professor of the Master's program in Videothoracoscopic Surgery at IAVANTE (Health Division of the Andalusian Government, Spain) and made significant contributions to numerous meetings and congresses on Thoracic Surgery worldwide, with over 70 presentations and talks.
Regarding the subject of this event, he developed a fully video-assisted thoracoscopic technique for first rib extirpation to treat Thoracic Outlet Syndrome in 2010. He published his innovative technique in 2011, which was one of the earliest instances of this type of surgery being documented. Since then, he has dedicated a significant portion of his time to researching and treating this disease, authoring four book chapters on the surgical management of Thoracic Outlet Syndrome.
He is an active member of several thoracic associations and societies. Presently, he serves as the vice-president of the Spanish Society of Thoracic Surgery (SECT), represents Spain as a Regent in the European Society of Thoracic Surgery (ESTS), and holds the role of Institutional Coordinator for the Spanish Register of Thoracic Surgery.
Additionally, Dr. Congregado is a Professor of Surgery at the University of Seville and an Academic of the Royal Academy of Medicine and Surgery of Seville. He holds a position at the largest University Hospital in Andalusia (Spain), serving as the Innovation Coordinator for the Department of General Thoracic Surgery at the Virgen del Rocío University Hospital in Seville.
