Biography

Dr. Helen Mohan is the past president of the association of surgeons in training and a colorectal fellow in the Peter Mac Cancer Centre. Her clinical research consists of more than 50 reviewed articles in the past 15 years.

SSI diagnosis and management

Surgical Site Infections (SSI) are complications that some patients suffer after surgeries, and which negatively impact various aspects. Moreover, they do not only have a negative effect on the life of the patient but also a high financial impact on hospitals. Thus, SSI prevention is so important, with various areas and techniques for action. Dr. Mohan presents the most frequently used ones. More specifically, she discusses the use of antibiotics in the preoperative stage for colorectal surgeries. All this information is given as an infographic. Even if preventive action is taken, SSI can still appear. For this reason, a clear definition and classification are required to achieve a good diagnosis. Dr. Mohan discusses the National Safety and Quality Health Service’s standard for the diagnosis of SSI in Australia. She exposes 3 tables to establish the type of SSI based on patient symptoms. After the diagnosis of SSI, action must be taken. Dr. Mohan explains two specific techniques: negative pressure wound therapy and negative pressure with irrigation.. Knowledge of the microbiome camp has been increasing and could have a huge impact on surgery.
