with Dr. Manuel Francisco Roxas
This session focuses on intestinal stomas and some tips you can take to improve in terms of prevention and detection. Sometimes, these are considered non-important issues, but this is not the case. When you create a stoma, you are creating a new organ.
First, the preoperative steps are crucial for stoma operations. Stenting can be a very useful tool for obstructing rectal cancers. The algorithm that the doctor follows depends on the stage of cancer. If the cancer is locally advanced without metastasis, a small incision transverse colostomy is performed.
Dr. Roxas points out that if you feel that the patient needs an ileostomy, it is recommended to do a laparoscopic because it is not easy to first make the incision and then look for the right part of the ileum to be removed.
When it comes to transverse colostomy, it is more common for a prolapsed stoma to appear, and the wounds are larger.
To sum up, prevention in intestinal stoma is very important because fewer surgeries will be performed, resulting in a healthier population.
