The Association of Women Surgeons (AWS), founded in 1981, is a not-for-profit educational and professional organization. With approximately 3,300 members of all genders, AWS is one of the largest organizations dedicated to enhancing the interaction and exchange of information between women surgeons. Truly an international organization, AWS has members in more than 40 countries. Mission: to inspire, encourage, and enable women surgeons to realize their professional and personal goals. AWS is committed to supporting women surgeons at various stages in their career – from medical school through retirement and offers our members programs and services to: ENGAGE current and future women surgeons to realize their professional and personal goals. EMPOWER women to succeed. EXCEL in those aspirations through mentorship, education and a networking community that promotes their contributions and achievements as students, surgeons and leaders.
In this session of "A Coffee With," Dr. Stephanie Bonne (Wake Forest University / Advocate Christ Medical Center) breaks down the mechanics of leadership within organized medicine. Drawing from 14 years of trauma clinical practice and her role as Vice Chair of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Committee on Trauma, Dr. Bonne will analyze how professional societies serve as the primary laboratory for leadership training. Stephanie Bonne, MD, FACS, FCCM, FAMWA is a professor of surgery at Wake Forest University school of medicine and primarily practices at Advocate Christ medical center in Chicago. She has practiced trauma for 14 years, dedicated to improving the care of injured patients and bridging the gap between public health and injury care. Dr. Bonne is an experienced trauma medical director, educator, and researcher in trauma and public health. Her academic interests are in injury and violence prevention, trauma quality and systems, and advocacy for injured patients. She serves as a vice chair for the American college of surgeons committee on trauma, the chair of the injury prevention committee for the American association for the surgery of trauma, and the secretary of the association of women surgeons.

In this episode of "A Coffee with Dr. McGuire," the discussion focuses on the shift toward more precise and less invasive oncological care. Dr. McGuire explores how integrating diverse medical specialties optimizes treatment planning, prioritizing therapeutic efficacy while reducing the extent of surgical intervention. With a focus on preoperative chemotherapy and patterns of care in axillary surgery. In alliance with the Association of Women Surgeons, this session examines the clinical advancements in de-escalating surgery and how this paradigm shift is significantly improving patient quality of life and long-term clinical outcomes. Dr. Kandace McGuire is a Professor of Surgery, the Chief of Breast Surgery and the Surgical Leader of the Multidisciplinary Breast Health Center at Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia. She also serves as the Senior Vice President for the cancer service line for the Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center. Her clinical and research interests include disparities in breast cancer care, surgical management of breast cancer after preoperative chemotherapy and patterns of care in axillary surgery. Dr. McGuire is active in several national organizations, including the Association of Women Surgeons, Society of Surgical Oncology, and the American Society of Breast Surgeons. She currently serves as the Past President of the Association of Women Surgeons.

Dr. Wang joined the Division of Acute Care Surgery at UNM in 2012 and has an active clinical practice inTrauma, Emergency General Surgery, and Surgical Critical Care. She was the Surgery Clerkship Director at UNM School of Medicine for 7 years and developed innovative curriculum for the undergraduate medical education program. She served on the curriculum committee, led the fourth year medical student bootcamp, and was the director of ATLS for many years. She is currently serves as a volunteer faculty for NBME, New Mexico ACS chapter, and inaugural president of AAMC chapter of Group of Women in Medicine and Science. She is an active member in the national Association of Women Surgeons, Association of Surgical Education, Association of Academic Surgeons, and Western Surgical Association. Chantal Reyna, MD, MHA, FACS, FSSO is a fellowship trained, board certified surgeon, specializing in diseases of the breast. She completed general surgery residency at the University Of Nevada School Of Medicine. Following her passion for breast cancer care, she pursued a fellowship in breast surgical oncology at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute in Tampa, Florida. She has experience practicing in a variety of clinical settings and is the current Oncology Clinical Lead of Breast Oncology and the Section Chief of Breast Surgical Oncology at Loyola University Medical Center. Her experience provides a unique perspective in clinical program building in both academic and community settings. She has been an active mentor to medical students, residents, and faculty alike, nationally and internationally. She speaks nationally and internationally about career development, including being the keynote speaker for the Association of Hospital Medical Education on professional identity and branding. Her research interests include minimizing axillary surgery and male breast cancer. She is an active member in the Society of Surgical Oncology, the American Society of Breast Surgeons and the Association of Women Surgeons. She is currently on the executive council for the Association of Women Surgeons and the Latino Surgical Society. She is an avid soccer fan, musical theater fan, enjoys reading and traveling internationally.
